The Gospel Rapper

It was so great to be able to talk with you guys on Christmas, I loved it SOOOOOOO much!! Don't worry, I thanked Sister S. like a billion times! :-) My favorite gift was the DVD with Christmas wishes from everyone, it was AMAZING!! I absolutely love my sweater too, I wear it like everyday! (even though it is like 75-80 degrees outside!) :)

I wear my awesome Superman PJs to bed each night, and I've almost listened to all the John Bytheway talks and I love them! I also got a sweet package from the Allen's, it was so great!!  I'd love it if you could send me more cool talks or music.

For the rest of Christmas day we spent some time trying to see people, but most of them were not home and stuff. We had dinner at a member's home and we had a really great time. Now I don't have pictures for you at the moment, but don't worry I'll be sending some I swear! :) We played games and were able to teach them a little message it was great!

The rest of the week was super awesome! We had our Book of Mormon study class that has been gaining popularity, and we had a lesson with an investigator and we set a baptism date for him! Now I can't say anymore than that because he has asked us to keep it to ourselves for now, but we will be meeting with him more and more to get him ready!

We also were asked by our Gospel Rapper neighbor J to go to the surprise birthday for his girlfriend! (they live together and have a 2 year old son) He had all his friends from his church there and we were able to talk with them about our church. Also something cool that happened was that one J's friends was talking to J's dad about N. (J's son) N just went through surgery on his intestines, and they were talking about how miraculous his recovery was and how bad his condition was and stuff. Now I had given a blessing to N a few weeks earlier, and what these guys were describing of what happened, is exactly what I had said in the blessing weeks earlier! How cool is that?!? :D

We had a mission conference today, we had Elder Richards of the Seventy there and he talked a lot about teaching simply. It was super awesome! I love you and miss you all! Have a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas from Elder Barker!!

It's been a good week. It's really nice and warm here, no snow. :( However, Elder Hall and I went up into the Mountains the other day and there was snow! I was so happy

We are going to go up there again on Christmas Day to visit a member of the ward! Yay!! I'm excited! The rest of what I've got to say will wait for Christmas! :P haha you'll just have to wait! ;) love you all, can't wait til Wednesday! Merry Christmas!

Christmastime in San Bernardino

My new companion is Elder Hall, he is from Arizona. He has been out one transfer more than I have.

I'm still in the Northpark ward, things are pretty much the same except that we have sisters in the ward now too. It has been a little interesting trying to help everyone to adjust to the singles ward, but I feel that the Lord is helping me do what I need to do.

I received my Christmas package and I loved it! I put up the little tree in the middle of our apartment and put the presents around it. I was thinking maybe I would open them while we Skype so I can get that Barker Family Christmas feel! :)

This week we had a wedding in the ward, we got to help out at the reception and stuff and that was fun. I was able to ordain V to be a priest on Sunday as well. It was awesome!

Sorry it's a short letter this week, but I love you guys and I can't wait to talk with you in just over a week!

Awesome week for a Baptism!

This week was so awesome, we spent most of the week saying goodbye to all the people in the ward for Elder Palmer. I'm a little sad he's leaving but I'm excited for him. He heads home tomorrow morning.

We also had Vince's Baptism! It was so awesome! He is such a stud! He went out and bought himself new clothes to wear and a nice vest and tie to go with that. He took out his earrings that he had been wearing for a long time all on his own and hasn't put them back in since! He seems so happy now! Elder Palmer baptized him, and I confirmed him! It was probably one of the most nerve-wracking things that I have ever done! But it was awesome!

Elder Barker, Vince, Elder Palmer & Elder Bushman
(Elder Bushman is Elder Palmer's former companion and had also taught
the gospel to V, it was cool that he was able to come for the Baptism.)

With the holidays coming up the work seems to be slowing down, but we still have a few people to teach. This next transfer I will be staying in the singles ward, my companion's name is Elder Hall, and I meet him for the first time on Wednesday. It will be an experience for me because I'm STILL getting used to the area! It is a big honking area, maybe you might want to send me out a GPS or something so I can find my way around! ;)

Elder Barker, Elder Palmer, K, & A
I got my camera cord and McKenna's letter so I will send her a letter home soon!:) I'm super excited for Christmas and being able to talk to all you guys! I love you all a lot!

Teaching by the Spirit

My Thanksgiving was so good! It went as follows, eat yummy dinner... talk with members...leave. Go to another house just to say Hi...they feed us another yummy dinner. Leave and go to another house, and rinse and repeat. :-) We had FIVE dinners! I think I gained like 20 pounds!

We had a lesson with V and he is on track for Baptism! He says he wants me to confirm him! I'm so excited about that!!
The day before Thanksgiving last week, I went on a companion exchange with a Spanish Elder, and you see I speak no Spanish! So I spent a lot of my day sitting there nodding and stuff. It was a really cool experience though!

We were contacting people in a store parking lot last week and this guy came up to us. He was really nice, and wanted to know kinda what drove us to do missionary work, and he commended us for being out in San Bernardino at night. But then he went on and told us that since he was right in his own beliefs that we were going to hell and that we were dragging others down to hell. He was a super nice guy, but still there really isn't any good way you can take that.

It makes me happy for the way missionaries work. We don't try to force our ideas on people, we invite them to find out for themselves if what we say is true. We as missionaries know it is true, but nothing we say or do really matters if a person doesn't believe. If a missionary is out here to prove everyone else wrong, then he (or she) is out here for the wrong reasons and things are going to be harder for them. As long as we help them to feel the spirit, then the spirit will tell them what is right and what is not. The spirit is the true teacher in this work.

After this guy left, I was very troubled by what he had said. I read my scriptures, prayed for understanding and guidance, and went to sleep. That day, I had received some letters from some friends. In these letters I was reminded of who I really am, and why I am out here. I'm helping others come to a knowledge that they have a loving Heavenly Father. I see the peace and joy that this brings into peoples lives! So my challenge to all those who really want to know if this is the truth. Don't take anyone's word for it, not even the missionaries. My challenge is to go and ASK GOD HIMSELF. It is promised that He will answer you, and it is my promise that He always keeps His promises!
Redlands Temple

I love you all and I and I can't wait for Christmas!! I loved the short video clip of Kameron! :-) That's so cool about Aaron's engagement, tell him "Hi" and "Congrats" from me!

Oh by the way, I looked at family search, and well dad's side of the family doesn't seem to exist anymore! What's up with that? Talk to you all again soon!

Pinewood Derby. Frustrations. Blessings.

This week has been a really slow one. :( Most of our appointments canceled and we barely got in to teach a lesson.

And then there was the weather! A SUPER CRAZY rainstorm came through here and it poured for like 3 days straight! It was like the other storm we had when I was in Redlands. Some of the streets here were totally flooded! We went up to the campus to contact people, but most of the people we got numbers for won't even answer so it is frustrating.

But I've also seen some miracles happen this week. We gave a blessing to the 2 year old son of one of our investigators, his name is N and he is super cute! He had to have surgery on his intestines because he was born with a birth defect. We told his mom and dad about blessings and they wanted us to give him one, so we did. Afterwards his mom was saying how she could feel the power of God in their home. So we are hoping that they will be more interested in learning about the gospel. We have an appointment tomorrow, so we will see.

Things are going good with Vince, he is on track. He had to work this past Sunday but he went to the 9:00 AM service all by himself!

We also were able to take two recent converts to the temple to do baptisms for the first time AND we were able to participate as well! We only did some confirmations but it was really cool to be able to use my priesthood in that way while on my mission. I have some pictures from that day but I will have to get those to you next week. :)

Thanksgiving will be nice, it is a normal day pretty much for us but we have been invited to like 3 Thanksgiving dinners. So...don't be surprised if they have to roll me off the plane when I come home!!!

Elder Palmer studying... must be why he's the zone leader! :)
Elder Barker...snoozing? Haha
I have a lot of pictures for you today from our Pinewood Derby, it was great!

Mine & Kendra's cars...which super hero will prevail?
Me & Kendra
And the winner is...Elder Barker!! YES!!

I got an email from Alyssa this week, I am sooooo jealous!!!! I can't believe she met Patrick Stewart and didn't even get me an autograph!! :P

I also heard from Ryan, Abby, Andria and Kate this week, it was great to hear from them!

Give everyone my love! Happy Thanksgiving!!!! I can hardly wait for Christmas so that I can call home!!!! :)

A Baptism date, delicious food, and don't knock the ding dongs!

It was so nice to see the pictures of McKenna opening her birthday present! I'm glad that she liked it!

Life in the singles ward is going good, some exciting news is that one of our investigators Vince, has a baptismal date for Dec 7th! He is super solid so I am excited! Elder Palmer and I want to have 2 baptisms this transfer, so there is one! Yay!

We haven't had any new investigators though, but we are trying. We go up onto the campus of Cal State each week and try to contact people. We get a lot of contacts and set up return appointments, but when it comes time for the appointment they text us saying "I don't feel very comfortable meeting with you guys." WHY?? It is frustrating! However, we have been meeting with some less actives and we still have other investigators that we are seeing.

It is a lot of fun to go to all of the singles activities like FHE (Family Home Evening). We are doing a no rules Pinewood Derby race. I'm making a car and I'm going to put rockets on the back or something. We also taught a mission prep class the other night that was really fun!

I don't have any pictures this week, I forgot to take some. But I will take plenty this week to make up for it! Don't knock my ding dong picture!! I was soooooo excited to be able to eat a ding dong again that I just had to document it!
(He sent these pictures home on his SD card)

I get fed well every night and I'm getting to know the people in the ward. Last night we had Pupusas and they were awesome! Think Mexican pancakes stuffed with meat, cheese and deliciousness!

I am really excited to hear about Patrick's mission call to Portugal, that's so cool!!

I was able to get in to see the orthodontist to get a new top retainer made and I go back to pick it up in 2 weeks. :)

Could you send me Colten's address? And you should tell Corbyn that I sent him an email and he should write me back ASAP!! :)

Love you all lots, tell everyone that I say "Hi!" ((Psychic Hug)) ;)

Ups and Downs

Surprise!!! I'm emailing today! :) (It's Veteran's Day, and we didn't think we'd hear anything today, so it is a nice surprise!) I realized that it is McKenna's birthday in a few days so I got her a little something, I should get it in the mail today. She will flip, I hope! :)My toe is doing absolutely wonderful, it doesn't hurt at all. I had my follow up appointment and the Dr said there will be no problems. Yay!

Things are good but I have some bad news about our Chinese investigators, they called us Monday night and told us that they talked with their parents back in China and their parents won't let them continue to learn from us. So they dropped us. :( It made us really sad but the rest of the week was good.

We have one investigator named Vince who is so close to getting baptized, all he needs to do is get Sundays off from work so he can come to church. We fasted with him the other day and we will see what happens when he talks to his boss. Other than that, not a lot has changed. My companion is a really cool guy, he is from Arizona. He is a zone leader, so that makes me...almost a zone leader. ;-) Haha He has been in this ward for 10 1/2 months! That is a long time! We get along great. :)

I love and miss you all and can't wait to talk to you all on Christmas!

Serving the Singles

Man, do I have some pictures for you! Serving in the Singles ward has been super fun, we have been really really busy!! We get to drive a truck because our area covers two stakes, we also get to go to all of the activities like institute and Family Home Evening. There was an Institute Halloween party my first day here and everyone dressed up, I got a picture with Luigi. Haha Guess what I was?? ...A missionary! :)
Of course he found Luigi... :)
On Halloween I made a makeshift costume out of stuff I had laying around. It was cool!

They feed us good here just like my last area, so don't worry about that! :) The singles in the ward sign up to feed us and sometimes we go with other missionaries who cover the family wards and eat with the singles families.

Like I said, we have been really busy. We are teaching like 7 people right now, it is great! We taught 17 total lessons this past week! :D But my favorite thing that happened this week is that we are teaching two girls from China. We found them out contacting on the campus of Cal State and they are so awesome! We had a lesson with them on how God is our loving Heavenly Father, and how they can talk to him through prayer. They had never heard of Jesus Christ or God really at all. They both said their first prayer! Ah, it was so cool! We got Chinese Book of Mormon's to give to them in our next lesson which should be tomorrow. I'm super excited!!

Something that wasn't so fun but was cool is that I got an ingrown toenail removed this week. :( I cut my toe moving another Elder's bed and it got infected and all ingrown, it was gross! (Momma's note: I'll spare everyone the photo... ) So I called the mission nurse who called a Dr, who then called a foot specialist who happens to be a member and I was able to get in to see him that same day. He removed a huge chunk of my toenail which was actually stuck inside of my toe! It is healing up nice and feels so much better so I'm happy! I have a follow up appointment with the Dr. on Thursday.

I did send Patrick an email, so I'll try to see if I can get to him through Andria or something. And it's so cool that Ryan and those guys showed up on Halloween, that makes me very happy! I also got McKenna's letter and it was super awesome!

Things have been going good for me and I've been making sure to write in my journal everyday! My companion is a zone leader and we try to stay as busy as possible, he is going home after this transfer.
My companion, Elder Palmer.
Well, I love and miss you all.

First Transfer

This week we met with some of our investigators, things are going slowly but we taught some good lessons. We've also been teaching a lot of our neighbors so that has been really cool.

Elder Walker from the Seventy came this week to do a mission tour with us on Tuesday and that was fun, it was a real highlight for the week. By the way, Sister Van Cott stopped me and said that she got a very nice note from my sweet mother! Ahhhh! :D What exactly did you say to her?!

I got my transfer call, I'm being transferred! I'm going to the San Bernardino YSA ward! The single people!! I'm a little sad that I'm leaving this area because I'll miss the people here but I'm excited for something new too.
My next area is a car area because the YSA area covers two cities. My new companion's name is Elder Palmer, he will be going home after this transfer so after that I get another companion. Wow! 3 transfers and 3 companions!

Have you guys been getting a lot of talks about the importance of member missionary work? We just had stake conference and that was what the whole adult session of conference was about! Missionary work is changing a lot, it may sound weird but in the places where the members are actively engaged in missionary work, the missionaries in those wards are teaching 20 to 30 lessons a week compared to the 4 that we just taught this week. It makes all the difference.

I did get my Halloween package and we had lots of fun with those glasses you sent, I got some great pictures! I'm doing well, love you all!

Miracles in the Lord's Work

Lots of miracles happened this week! The Lord has been putting so many people in our way, it is great! Something that I have learned is that when you let the Lord control His work, miracles WILL happen!

We met a woman named J. and we were talking with her about the plan of salvation and we gave her a Book of Mormon. She opened it and was super excited for some reason. She told us that she couldn't read without her glasses, but she sat there and read the first verse of 1st Nephi! It was crazy, she was able to read it clear as day without her glasses!

We have a lot more people to teach now but the hard part is actually getting to teach them. It seems like every time we set up an appointment it falls through but we are still trying our best and we know it will work out.

One of our newest investigators is a woman who was a referral given to us by some other Elders. Elder Taylor and I went to try to meet her. She is a white woman living with a black man and apparently because of this they have been the victims of some severe hate crimes! Someone burned down her shed with some puppies in it, can you believe that?? Their house was broken into and trashed too, it has just been awful! Her faith has been faltering because of this. Her boyfriend asked us missionaries to talk with her to "get her right with God". She is a really sweet lady and we talked a lot about God's love for us, and how she can get closer to her Heavenly Father.  We have an appointment with her this week so we will see how it goes.

Love and miss everyone!

Short but sweet...

Sorry I couldn't email yesterday. It was Columbus Day so the library was closed. That also means I don't have a lot of time this week to do emails. :( However, I'm going to be sending you guys a letter with my SD card and the stories of what has happened this week.  Yes, I got your package thank you for that! :) Keep sending me stuff! :D Oh and thanks for getting those addresses for me!  I'm doing really good!!  I can't believe I've been out for almost two months! It is crazy!! Anyway look for that letter, I'll try to send it today or tomorrow! :)

Love Ya,

P.S. Oh ya and tell KC I've been writing in my journal. :)

Conference was Amazing!!

Yes, I got your greenie package and it made me laugh! Then I went and downed all of the food in like ten seconds. I might be fat when I come home. :)  I had a great Birthday! We went over to the Mission Presidents house for our P-Day activity. We were able to relax and play some pool and stuff. Then Sister Van Cott made me brownies! Then they all sang to me and we had brownies and ice cream. It was Great!! Then there is my package... It was AWESOME! :D haha I loved the legos from the Allens! And all of the birthday cards! :) I also got one from the Searles, that was totally great!! They all sent me cool missionary pictures that were so funny.  Kameron sent me an Arrested Development themed paper that was super funny, and Shaury got me popcorn!

Redlands Temple

"Super" Elder Barker on P-day, ready for a hike
I want to share a funny story that happened this week. A few days ago me and Elder Taylor were trying to find the house of someone who was supposed to live in our area. So we were searching on this street called the Terrace, and we couldn't find the house number. It was 505 the Terrace, so after searching for like 30 minutes we sat down on a bench and looked across the street. Guess what, we found 505 the Terrace. The best part is... 505 the Terrace is a lamp post! It made me laugh so hard.

The Lamp post

(Momma's note:  I'm thinking the address on the lamp post is for the house behind it but hey, maybe it is just for the lamp post... Haha)

So conference was so amazing! It was exactly what I needed. I was spiritually revived after it. I loved Elder Holland's talk the most. His and President Monson's talks were my absolute favorites! I had felt I needed extra strength and prayed earnestly and when I watched Conference, well I really can't describe what happened. A very intense feeling of love and peace came over me as I sat there and listened to the member of the Seventy who was speaking. So intense it brought tears to my eyes and I came to a knowledge that my Father in Heaven not only loves me very deeply, but that he knows me and my fears and he is always there for me in my time of need. I know without a shadow of a doubt I am out here doing the Lords work. and that this is His work! He guides me in my everyday life to help strengthen not only those around me, but me as well. I testify of this in the name of the Savior Jesus Christ Amen.

Love you and miss you lots!!

2nd week in the field. #ifinallygotmybike!! #ithurtsmybutt!

I finally got my bike!! It is so nice but it hurts my butt! The weather has been cooling off a little bit, but it still is like sunny and 85!!

The members are really nice and we are fed dinner every night by someone in the ward. We are trying to visit as many of the members as we can. We are trying to get them more involved in the missionary effort. We are not supposed to be tracting anymore so it is up to the members to find people for us to teach. Me and my companion Elder Taylor have been trying to talk to everyone on the streets trying to make contacts. Some guy honked at us and flipped us off so that was kinda exciting.

We have been meeting with recent converts. D. was baptized on the first of September and he is such an awesome guy. He is a big fan of comic books and he likes history. Imagine me, but 40 and black. He is super funny and loves to learn. E. and her husband were baptized a few months back. She has breast cancer and has had a really hard life. But you would never know it if you met her. Her faith and view on the gospel is inspiring. She also has a great sense of humor and is great to get along with. She called me a really great teacher! :D

As for L, we were able to teach her the first lesson. It was hard because things kept coming up so we ended up just teaching her right there on her front porch. We gave her a Book of Mormon and she said she would read and pray about it so we will see what happens. I've met some interesting people out and about in our neighborhood but more on that another time. :)

I love you and miss you all!! Can't wait to get your birthday package! :) And this mystery Package?

(He's referring to a package I told him about that is coming from some friends... The Searle's, I just told him a surprise was on it's way. Hehe)

Dear Family and Friends,

It is good to hear from you! So to start off I haven't gotten my bike yet. It might have been sent to the wrong place. So if you can check that out for me that would be awesome. I haven't gotten any packages yet so at least I have something to look forward to. :)

My first area has been great so far. When we got here we met the mission president. President Van Cott is super cool and his wife is super funny. She reminds me of you momma! :-)

Arriving in Redlands
My companion is Elder Taylor from Sandy, Utah and has been out for about 16 months. We get along great and he is super funny.. I got that wish, YES! (He had wished for a companion with a sense of humor).

The ward I'm serving in is the Redlands Pioneer ward. We don't have any investigators just yet but we have a few people who have invited us back. One person is a single mom that lives in our area. She doesn't live with her kids but she is trying to be able to send the out here. She seems to be the most interested in the gospel of all the people I've met so hopefully it goes well. Other than L. we have been meeting with less active members. One of these guys is Bro. G.. He is a 56 year old who is just barely starting to come back to church. He is so awesome!  He is a cyclist so he has been helping me fix the bike I'm riding since I don't have my own.

The people in this ward are so cool and they take care of us. A bunch of them like Firefly and Arrested Development. So awesome. The apartment we live is isn't the nicest but hey we have fun. Me and Elder Taylor and our roommates, Elder Weaver and Elder Summerhays get along well.

Today is my first P day and we went on a hike for a zone activity, I really enjoyed that. Say Hi to everyone for me, and to write to me too! :)

Great MTC Experiences

My loving family, :)

I'm doing great! Just to let you know what has been going on. I've been made district leader of my small district at the MTC!

Tomorrow I get a chance to go through the temple, I know it will be great.

I got your box of sunshine! It was awesome! Send me more! Getting mail here is like the most awesome thing ever! Also, I think you should send me a CD Player with some speakers and some music. Seriously DO IT! Songs I want are Come Thou Fount and Praise to the Man. :)

So, some info for Alyssa and Skylar. I'm staying in the main MTC dorms (Sorry Alyssa), but it has been great. We put some fun stuff the departing Elders left us in the vents for the new district to find. ;-P

I had my first TRC investigator experience. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. His name was Jorge and we really connected. However it would have been great to see Alyssa or Skylar as my investigator. :)

I love you all, I can't wait to hear from you all next.

Letter for Mom :)

I don't know why he hasn't been able to email yet but I got another letter in the mail today. Love it!!

Dear Momma,

Thanks for your letters, I really love them. I want you to know that even though I'm far away I'm always in reach. So don't worry about me. Even though you will. I hope you've been sleeping! ;-)

Know that whenever you want to talk to me, just write. You can write me every day if you want, I won't mind. :)

I can't wait to see what type of goodies you'll be sending me. So send lots! And tell everyone you know to send me lots! I want to hear from lots of people!

I love you momma and think of you often.

First Letter from the MTC

Today we got a letter in the mail from Sam, made my whole day! We haven't received any emails yet so I was super excited when I picked up the mail!! :):):):)

Dear Family,

So my first day at the MTC was good. I met my companion. His name is Elder Griffin. He is cool. Kinda a bit like me but not as much.

I saw that you packed my red blanket! That was a nice surprise! :)

Ammon showed me around so it was kinda cool. I've seen quite a few people from school and other places so it has helped me to feel at home.

Oh, tell Skylar that I checked the vents and all I found was a peanut butter bar!

They have us just jump right in, so I know I'll be busy. Everyone is super nice, but I hate being "the new guy".

I'm rooming with other guys going to my mission and they are pretty awesome. I know I'll have a good time here.

I love you guys very much, and I miss ya already. Talk to you later! :)

Love, your missionary
